RELIEF WORK

Serve Samman is actively involved in providing relief assistance in disaster hit areas. As of now, we have helped the victims of Nepal Earthquake, Uttrakhand floods and Jammu & Kashmir floods. We provide them with safe shelter, hot meals, essential relief supplies, emotional support and health services like first aid and medicines. Trained Serve Samman workers often meet up with families to develop individual plans, identify and implement available resources to enable quick recovery.

UTTARAKHAND FLOODS
By god's grace our team was present in Uttarakhand for the opening of a New Vocational Centre when the recent disaster of 2013 took place. Since we witnessed the disaster ourselves, we put in all our resources to help. Immediately after the disaster we set up relief camps, where we provided basic necessities to the victims who had lost their homes and loved ones. We reached out to the victims by providing safe shelter, food packets, basic utensils, clothes, essential relief supplies, emotional support and health services like first aid. Disasters like these can have a lasting impact on the victims if it's not dealt with properly and thus, the priority of the moment was to provide comfort and take care of their mental health.

About 12 trucks full of relief material was sent around which alongside our relief camps were able to help 34,377 people in piecing their lives back together. In addition, we nursed the cattle in our camps who were terribly affected by the disaster as well.

JAMMU AND KASHMIR FLOODS
In 2014 India once again had to deal with floods of great intensity that resulted in a loss of hundreds of lives and rendering thousands homeless.

According to official reports the disaster of Jammu and Kashmir was almost as dangerous as that of Uttrakhand and needed immediate attention so as to stop it from festering into a much bigger problem.

Serve Samman sent consignments with relief material every 5 days to Kashmir. Our team members went to Jammu and Kashmir, rescued the flood victims and provided them with the basic necessities of life to ensure that they survived and got through the tough time.

Our main Target areas included Poonch and Rajouri, small villages in Jammu and Kashmir, which though were badly affected, had very little aid and resources reaching them.

RELIEF CAMP AT RAJOURI, POONCH, JAMMU & KASHMIR
Post the disastrous floods that hit Jammu & Kashmir, Serve Samman sent trucks full of relief material and essential goods to Rajouri and Poonch. The founder of Serve Samman, Dipak Khanna personally went to the interiors of these villages to distribute medicines, dry foods, tarps, blankets, clothes, milk powder, drinking water, and chlorine tablets with the help of a small team. They helped individuals by distributing essential goods, treating their wounds and injuries as well as assisted them in building temporary setups for women and children's safety.

MEDICAL CAMP AT SRINAGAR

Apart from helping the flood victims, Serve Samman sent a team of doctors to Srinagar, who distributed the pertinent medicines to the affected individuals after a checkup. Dr. Rachna Khanna Singh, a Governing Board Member of Serve Samman, Homeopathic Specialist and Psychologist by profession, went there to help those in distress and anguish as a consequence to the flood.

RELIEF CAMP AT NEPAL

Soon after the Nepal disaster, a team of health professionals from Serve Samman in collaboration with Bareilly Mission Hospital set up various medical as well as relief camps in three remote villages of Nepal namely DHULIKHEL, KAMAL DHANDA, and SINDUPAL CHOWK. These villages are more than 3 hours away from Kathmandu, the capital city. Given the inaccessibility of these regions, Serve Samman relief camps were the first to traverse the lands and help the people. More than 900kg of medicines and other relief material were carried by the formidable eight members of the team for the victims in Nepal. A day before the team left, half of the material was sent via air cargo and the rest was personally taken by the team members. To alleviate distress faced by the victims, an additional 300 kg of essential items such as rice, oil, and tin sheets were bought from Kathmandu by the team.

The medical camp established by the team was led by a squad of orthopedics, general physicians, and psychologists. Several mobile dispensaries were set up which distributed relevant medication to all the people of the villages. Other relief materials that had been purchased from Delhi and Kathmandu consisting of dry food, chlorine tablets, sanitary napkins, and blankets were also circulated as per the immediacy of the requirement. The team did not just take care of the wounds and injuries of the people but also helped them rebuild their lives there. Even though most of the team members were doctors, they played several roles during their time there and assisted the villagers in reconstructing their village which experienced the warth of the earthquake.

Soon after the success of the initiative, another team from Serve Samman with immense support from C & S ELECTRICAL LTD, went to Nepal to build bore wells and water pipelines in Archale Village. Since the place had no water supply, in order to replenish the water supply in the village the team installed several water pipelines across the village as well as built bore wells to ensure proper supply of water throughout the area. Thus, Serve Samman not only helped in the emergency response but also helped in the disaster recovery by assisting the villagers in the reconstruction of life.

The most significant step taken by the team of Serve Samman in collaboration with C & S Electrical Limited was to refurbish the only primary school of the village and reopen it for the children of the village. Upon reopening the school, the team distributed water bottles, tiffin boxes, biscuits and juices to all the children who came in. The founder of Serve Samman, Mr. Dipak Khanna along with the resident representative of Nepal paid a visit to the school and spent the day with the kids, distributing food and snacks. Water purifiers were also installed in the school to ensure clean water supply in the school premises to create a hygienic space and safeguard the children against diseases.

The team also held several events during the phase two initiative as discussed below:
